Vehicle Maintenance to Do After a Long Winter

A mechanic works on a car's tire with a drillNow that we’re solidly into spring, we’re leaving cold weather in the past. Americans tend to drive more in the summer and spring than in the winter, mainly due to the weather. So, there’s a good chance you’ll be doing a bit more driving and traveling in the coming months.

Before you hit the road, however, it’s important to ensure your vehicle is prepared. Depending on where you live, the winter can be very hard on your vehicle, causing certain issues. These issues can lead to the car not functioning as it should, which can lead to accidents. Stay safe by doing this maintenance on your vehicle this spring:

Check Your Tires

Unfortunately, cold weather can cause the air in your tires to have a lower pressure. Every 10 degrees in temperature coincides with your tires losing one PSI. Generally, your vehicle will warn you about this, and you’ll fill the tires to the proper pressure. So once the temperature warms up, your tires may have over pressure. Always check your tire pressure when the spring begins. It’s also wise to check the tread to ensure it’s in good shape. You can do this by placing a penny upside down in the tread of your tire. If it touches the top of Lincoln’s head, you have enough tread.

Change the Oil and Filters

You shouldn’t just change your oil and filters during the spring, but it’s especially important coming out of long winter. Your oil and fluids can separate and lose their effectiveness when you don’t drive as much. An oil change will give you peace of mind, knowing your engine is lubricated and ready to go.

Clean the Undercarriage

You can’t see the underside of your vehicle, so you may not think of it much. But winter can be rough on the undercarriage, especially if you live in an area that salts the road to prevent ice. This salt can build up, leading to structural issues and, eventually, an unsafe vehicle. Make sure to either clean your undercarriage in the spring or have it done professionally.
