Crash Testing – Head-On Test 2-3 at the MATAI 2026 Conference

Chevrolet Bus Head On Impact with Volvo Tractor

On June 8, 2026 in Fargo, ND a series of Crash Tests were conducted as part of the MATAI (Midwest Association of Technical Accident Investigators) 2026 Conference.

This test simulates a vehicle where the van driver started to lose steering control as it approached an intersection resulting in a 2012 Chevrolet Express Bus impacting a stopped 2009 Volvo VNL Tractor Head On at ~34 mph. This test also illustrates what happens to the bus occupants when they are, or are not, belted properly into their seats.

The Chevrolet Bus Instrumented Delta-v was ~29-31 mph.

The Tractor Instrumented Delta-v was 6-7 mph due to the impact. The Trailer duals had rear ward movement of ~ 51-54 inches.
